“A cathedra”
A great dome built from nothing but brown lines
Brown lines climb out of pale paper like smoke settling into stone.
Two clocks keep a time that feels like late afternoon.
The dome holds its breath under a small cross.
On the wide steps a few tiny people stop and wait.
Faint marks drift across the sky like notes no one finished.
The tall doors stay open and white, full of nothing but light.
The work
Aman Kumar makes this print in 2025 at RIMT University in Ludhiana. It is part of a group of prints about old buildings and sacred stories. For most of the group he carves woodblocks. For this cathedral he changes his method and uses etching. Etching lets him draw fine lines that feel like a quick sketch. A thin layer of ink left on the plate gives the paper a warm brown tone. Kumar wants old stone to feel heavy and lasting in ink and paper.
In the artist’s words
“I have been immersed in architectural forms and spiritual narratives. I wanted to translate the heavy, timeless feeling of ancient spaces into ink and paper. For the cathedral piece I used an etching technique. It gave me sketchy, fine architectural lines and a rich, sepia-toned plate tone.”
