Madmast Nandi

A sacred bull rolls over, bells ringing, lost in his own joy

Blue dust on a grey hide, like ash after rain.
The bull tips over, hooves to the sky.
Rows of small bells hang still, yet you can almost hear them.
His eye is half shut, heavy and pleased.
Behind him pale clouds rise in soft rounds.
The cloth on his back carries leaves that do not fall.

The work

Punit Kadwane, of Shipra Fine Art College in Ujjain, paints Nandi, the bull of Shiva. Nandi is often shown kneeling and still. Here he rolls on his back with his legs in the air. His head turns back and his eyes half close. Kadwane draws on Hindu myth and folk art. He treats myth as a living language. He builds the blue and grey body in speckled layers of acrylic. Strings of small bells and a pale cloth with leaves follow the curve of the round canvas.

In the artist’s words

My artistic practice is rooted in the exploration of spirituality, mythology, and the subtle relationship between the inner and outer worlds. Through painting, I seek to translate intangible emotions, philosophical reflections, and cultural memories into visual narratives that resonate with contemporary audiences while remaining connected to the richness of Indian tradition. I use multiple mediums like acrylics, oils, ink and mixed media on canvas. Drawing inspiration from Hindu mythology, sacred symbolism, folk traditions, and personal experiences, I create compositions that move beyond literal representation. My works often feature divine figures, symbolic forms, and meditative spaces that invite viewers to engage with themes of devotion, consciousness, transformation, and self-discovery. Rather than…
