BETWEEN RAIN AND ROOTS
Rain that moves like roots across a small square of paper
Blue runs sideways, the way rain runs on a bus window.
It splits into thin roots and holds on.
Under it the paper is the colour of rice water.
Red dots sit in rows like seeds waiting for the ground to open.
A few dark ones keep watch.
Where the blue thins, pale light comes through.
The work
Debjit Ghoshal makes Between Rain and Roots in 2026 with acrylic and pen on handmade paper. The work measures 15 × 15 cm. Dark blue streaks pull across the square. Hundreds of small red and dark dots cover the cream paper between them. Ghoshal studies at the Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship. As a child Ghoshal could not talk with ease. Cutting paper and drawing on walls became a way to speak. Ghoshal was self-taught from class four to high school.

After that I took the practice seriously. From childhood I was not able to talk fluently as an normal person, so I expressed myself or my expressions through cutting papers, by drawing on walls, making something by using dough by that time I observe the everything , nature to human behavioral changes and also environments around me—architecture, streets, structures, textures, and changing cityscapes—and transform these observations into layered visual compositions. I work with different mediums and techniques, including watercolour, gouache,…
