ARGHA PRATIM SADHU
utsav
A festival, seen from behind the open jaws
Black ink pressed into grey paper, like smoke on a wall.
A striped head opens its jaws wider than the page allows.
Something small waits behind the teeth, half a face, half a crowd.
On the left the lines run thick as wet grass.
Two dark bars stand at the top like doors left open.
The festival is loud here. It has teeth.
The work
Argha Pratim Sadhu makes this lithograph in 2020. Sadhu studies at the College of Visual Art, Kolkata and is based in Habra. The print is 25.4 cm wide and 15.7 cm high. Black ink sits on pale grey-brown paper. A striped animal head fills the right side. Its mouth is wide open and full of teeth. Hatching and dark bands cover the left. Below the image Sadhu writes the medium and the Bengali title in pencil. The title utsav means festival.
In the artist’s words
“For me, reality is not limited to what is visible. Objects, landscapes, people and nature may be starting points, but I do not want to reproduce them literally. My creative process is a dialogue between conscious thought and unconscious response. Unexpected marks and forms become part of the work.”
