Houseplant
Loved, admired and kept indoors, like a plant in a pot
Gold seeps down the silk like old rain on a wall.
Two lilies bend where her ears should be, soft and already folding.
Glass chandeliers hang from them, catching a light that is not there.
Her mouth meets the pot as if she drinks from it or grows from it.
A necklace sits on the pot's round belly, heavy with stones.
Under everything, thin roots look for somewhere to go.
The work
Tanishq Pratap Singh lives in Rudrapur, Uttarakhand, where cows stand between the traffic and the shops. Drawing lilies in his small garden, he sees that a cow's ear is about the size of a lily petal. In Houseplant the petals become ears. The head rises from a pot like a plant kept indoors, safe and cared for. Small chandeliers hang beside her. Singh paints on Chanderi, a fine silk with golden threads that he bought long before only because it shone.
