Monochrome serenity
A white wall and a stone corner divide the sky
A white wall rises like a sheet of paper held up to the sky.
Along its top runs one thin dark line.
The grey frame is rough with small grains of stone.
In its corner a deep shadow keeps the cold.
Above, the clouds drift slowly and the stone stays still.
Everything here is quiet and every edge is sharp.
The work
Mayank Rastogi makes this photograph in 2023. He is from the College of Arts and Crafts at Lucknow University. Here a white wall meets a frame of grey stone under a cloudy sky. Rastogi wants to understand how light changes the way we see simple forms. He looks at structure and edges. He looks at the empty space around a shape. Seen this closely the forms become almost abstract. For Rastogi a photograph does not need a complicated subject.
In the artist’s words
“I was trying to understand how light can change the way we see simple objects and forms. I was interested in their structure, edges and the spaces created around them. I wanted to focus on their shapes and see how they could become almost abstract through photography. Photography does not always need a complicated subject.”
