Metamorphosis
A blue face waits where the grid gives way
Teal, navy, turquoise, the blue of a swimming pool at night.
The squares march in rows and then stop short.
In the gap a face rises, the colour of deep water.
Two small lights sit in the dark eyes.
The mouth is closed. It has not decided to speak.
At the edges the grid keeps counting, square after square.
The work
In Metamorphosis Khushi Aggarwal paints a face in deep blue. It floats in a dark field. Around it, small squares of teal, turquoise, navy and pale blue cover the canvas like tiles. Near the face the squares fall away in steps. The work is acrylic on canvas. Aggarwal makes work about identity: a person alone and a person among others. In painting Aggarwal borrows from printmaking, sculpture and drawing to make 'thoughtful and calculated distortions'. Aggarwal, of Amity University, is based in Ghaziabad.
In the artist’s words
“My work is primarily about identity as an umbrella term. This includes community, individuality and day-to-day consumption. My self-portraits convey isolation as well as community. With my paintings, I break away from traditional painting elements and borrow some from printmaking, sculpture and drawing to continue expressing myself through thoughtful and calculated distortions.”
