The Frenzy of the Flames
A wandering line looks for fire inside spilled colour
Orange climbs the creased paper like heat up a wall.
Pink and green meet and do not stay apart.
A thin dark line wanders in loops as if it has lost its way home.
Small yellow crescents flicker at the edges.
The paper wrinkles where the water rested.
In the middle a green leaf holds still while everything burns.
The work
Asmita Das studies at The Indian College of Arts and Draftsmanship in Kolkata. She made this small painting in 2025 with watercolour on Nepali handmade paper. The sheet is only 14.8 × 10.5 cm. Its soft creases catch the colour in pools. Orange, pink and green run into each other. A thin dark line loops across the surface and finds shapes like flames and leaves. Das picks her materials to match a feeling. "I want materials themselves to become part of the feeling of the work."
In the artist’s words
“I use materials to express how I feel at that moment, which you will see in paintings such as 'The Frenzy of the Flames'. I want materials themselves to become part of the feeling of the work. Sometimes the spreading of the colours first feels like losing the battle, but later it becomes my biggest power.”
