Soul
Fire-coloured fish circle in water as dark as night
Orange and white bodies bend through water the colour of ink.
Blue strokes curl behind each tail like marks left by a thumb.
A pink lotus opens at the edge. Lily pads hold a lime-green light.
Small bubbles rise and stay where they are.
Nothing here is still. Even the dark seems to move.
I wait for the fish to come round again.
The work
Ram Vishal paints koi turning in a dark pond. Pink lotus flowers and green lily pads crowd the left edge. Short blue strokes curl around the fish like moving water. Vishal studies at Graphic Era Hill University in Dehradun. Soul is one of eight paintings in his collection. He works in acrylic on stretched canvas. He finds proportion, colour balance and texture the hardest parts. When a painting goes wrong, he corrects it and tries again. For him, art also means "being patient with the work."
In the artist’s words
“Throughout the process, I faced different challenges, from developing an idea to translating it accurately onto the canvas. There were moments when the artwork did not turn out the way I had imagined. Instead of seeing these difficulties as failures, I treated them as opportunities to understand my medium better and improve my skills.”
