“Wings of freedom”
Seven white horses run toward us out of a red evening
The sky is the red of a coal held too long.
A pale sun sits low behind a line of birds.
Seven horses come at us in one long stroke of white.
Their manes lift. Their hooves throw up orange dust.
Two palms stand black at the edges like open doors.
The oil lies smooth where the light falls on their backs.
The work
Wings of Freedom is an oil painting on stretched canvas by Ram Vishal. He is a student at Graphic Era Hill University in Dehradun. He makes this work in 2023. The canvas is wide and low, 60.96 × 121.92 cm. Seven white horses run in a line under a red sky. It is one of eight works Vishal makes as a group. He says the hard parts are proportion, colour balance and texture. When a part goes wrong, he changes it and tries again.
In the artist’s words
“Maintaining proportions, achieving the right colour balance, creating realistic details, managing textures and keeping the overall composition harmonious required patience and continuous effort. There were moments when the artwork did not turn out the way I had imagined. Instead of seeing these difficulties as failures, I treated them as opportunities to understand my medium better and improve my skills.”
