Gagan or sagar ke beech
A child, a bird and a blue face hang in the dark
Night comes down from the top of the canvas. A thin grey line keeps the sky from the ground.
A blue face looks out from a torn edge of light.
An orange child stands still, made of pencil lines and warm paint.
A strip of yellow water holds one green wave.
Below, a pale bird lies on its side with its eye still open.
Everything waits between the high dark and the low dark.
The work
Aniket Dharmendra Varma paints from daily life and memory, not from a fixed theme. Varma studies for his MFA in Painting at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. His work asks questions about faith that began in his own home. The square canvas is painted in acrylic. A strip of blue sky sits above a black ground. Shapes float in the dark: a blue face, an orange child drawn in pencil, a patch of yellow and green. Below lies a large grey white bird with a dark eye.
