Something small and pale pushes up through the red
Red folds over red, like heat closing a door.
High in one corner, a dark blue eye half opens.
Lower down, a ring the colour of old cream holds the night inside it.
Something pale twists there, a beak or a bud, lifting its tip.
The paint is thick enough to show the brush.
Nothing is finished changing yet.
The work
Vishakha Gautam paints moments of change. Gautam works in New Delhi and made this painting in 2025. It measures 60.96 × 50.8 cm. Each work begins with an idea or a feeling. The end is not always clear at the start. Gautam lets the painting grow and changes things along the way. Here deep reds turn in rings around a small pale circle. Inside it a twisting shape lifts upward. Gautam hopes viewers will find their own meaning in it.
In the artist’s words
“I paint things I think about and things I go through. A lot of my work comes from moments of change, when something ends, something shifts or you suddenly see yourself or life differently. These moments can be uncomfortable, but they can also open up something new.”
