Lord murugan
A temple throne, small enough to hold in two hands
A god no bigger than two hands sits on a spiral page.
Gold curls rise over him to meet the face of a lion.
Two peacocks keep watch in blue and green.
His spear stands straight as a lamp wick.
Purple cloth folds across his knee like evening.
Blue wash runs to the edge of the paper
and the painted table glows red underneath.
The work
Shweta S, of Sri Venkateshwara College of Fine Arts in Hyderabad, usually paints in acrylic and oil. She works on studio canvases and on large wall murals. Here she works small. Lord Murugan sits on a golden throne on a sketchbook page of 12 × 15 cm. He holds his spear upright. Two peacocks stand on the pillars beside him. A lion face crowns the arch. Shweta builds the jewellery and carving in warm yellows and browns. A blue wash frames the page.
In the artist’s words
“Drawing from mythologies, ancient archetypes and spiritual traditions, I portray divine beings as expressions of cosmic energy and human emotion. These deities are not distant or unapproachable in my work. Instead, they are deeply embedded within the ecology of the painting. I seek to make the invisible worlds of spirit and myth tangible.”
