Towards you
Brass that leans forward, as if someone waits just ahead
Green rust on brass, like old coins left in the rain.
A round head tips forward. The body stretches thin behind it.
Two soft lobes trail like wings or like feet that have left the ground.
One bent rod is all that holds it up.
Below, the wood is warm and red. Its grain runs sideways.
The figure does not look down. It is already leaning towards someone.
The work
Piyush Gond studies at the College of Art, Delhi University in New Delhi. Gond works in sculpture and mixed media. In this work a brass figure leans forward through the air. Its round head and soft body end in two lobes like wings. A thin curved rod holds it above a block of wood. Gond uses simple human forms to give shape to feelings such as longing and the need for connection. In Gond's words: "Rather than telling a specific story, I create forms that invite multiple interpretations..."

I am interested in exploring feelings that often remain unseen or difficult to express, such as love, longing, vulnerability, care, and the need for connection. Through my work, I try to give these emotions a physical presence. I often use simplified and abstract human forms to explore how people relate to one another and how emotional experiences influence our sense of self and belonging. Experimentation is an important part of my…
