A Daily Commute

One hand holds the rail. The other gathers what fell

Rust-red legs stand like a forest that never moves.
Above them, a yellow rail and three yellow loops.
One loop is taken by a grey fist.
The man below sits low on white, folded small.
His fingers spread over little yellow pieces, bright as the rail.
The same colour holds him up and lies at his feet.

The work

Pranjal Saini is an animation film designer from Delhi. He draws the people around him. Then he makes them move. His subjects are workers, crowds and the cost of a day's labour. In A Daily Commute he paints in acrylic on canvas. A man sits on the floor of a crowded carriage. One hand grips a yellow strap. The other reaches for small yellow shapes on the floor. Behind him stands a wall of legs and feet. Saini teaches Applied Art at the College of Art in Delhi.
