जिवन
She sits very still. The crow is the one watching
A band of red rises behind her, still warm.
Pale flowers lean out of it on thin stems.
She sits on a ledge the colour of turmeric, one hand resting.
The crow beside her keeps one white eye open.
Smaller birds are only lines, half drawn and half gone.
Gold breaks through the brown sky in torn patches.
The work
Dharti Balasaheb Kaware studies at Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. The title of this acrylic painting, जिवन, means life. A woman sits on a yellow ledge in front of a band of deep red. Pale flowers rise behind her. A crow stands near her hand. Small birds drawn in loose dark lines walk beside it. Kaware works in layers. The surface is scraped, erased and built again. Earlier marks stay visible. The work measures 91.44 × 76.2 × 4 cm.
In the artist’s words
“I am interested in the inner and outer dimensions of womanhood. The body becomes a symbol of natural existence, freedom, vulnerability and selfhood rather than an object of representation. Birds and other forms become metaphors for observation, restriction and release. I work through layers, scraping, erasing and rebuilding, allowing traces of earlier surfaces to remain visible.”
