घर
A woman watches through the wire of an old window
Blue paint lifts from the wood like dry skin.
Rust spreads across the mesh, the colour of old tea.
In one window a nest waits with no eggs.
In the other a woman looks at us through the wire.
Her face is half there and half weather.
A small white bird stands in the corner of her frame.
The latch between them could still open.
The work
Dharti Balasaheb Kaware is from Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai. घर means home. The work is made on an old pair of window shutters. The blue paint is worn and the wire mesh is still in place. On the left a nest of dry fibres sits on a patch of rust-brown paint. On the right a woman's face looks out through the mesh. A small pale bird stands at its edge. Kaware scrapes and rebuilds the surface so older layers stay visible.

In the artist’s words
My practice explores the relationship between existence, identity, memory, and the social structures that shape human experience. I am particularly interested in the inner and outer dimensions of womanhood, where the body becomes a symbol of natural existence, freedom, vulnerability, and selfhood rather than an object of representation. Faces, masks, locks, keys, birds, and other recurring forms become visual metaphors for identity, observation, restriction, transformation, and release. I work through layers, fragments, textures, scraping, erasing, and rebuilding, allowing traces of earlier surfaces to remain visible. This process reflects the way experiences accumulate and become part of our identity. My imagery often moves between the familiar and the uncertain, creating spaces…
