inner landscapes
Small dark circles look back from pools of brown ink
Brown water dries at the edges and leaves a darker line.
A small blue circle sits on top of a stack, like an eye just opened.
Below a pale sky the ground turns to rust and grey.
Red spots crowd one sheet like leaves after rain.
The paper keeps every place the water stopped.
The work
Anurag Mankar is from Nagpur. The artist's college is the Sir J.J. School of Art, Architecture and Design in Mumbai. The work is a set of four small ink drawings on paper. Each sheet is about 20 × 14 cm. Mankar lets water, ink and paper act freely. Colours bleed and stains spread. Accidents become part of the picture. Two sheets hold stacked shapes with small dark circles like eyes. One looks like dark ground under a pale sky. One is covered in rust-red marks.
In the artist’s words
“My paintings are about inner landscapes: the unseen spaces formed by memory, emotion, experience and imagination. Water, pigment and paper interact freely. Bleeding colours and accidental textures become traces of thoughts, memories and feelings that cannot always be expressed in words. The repeated circular forms can be read as openings, eyes, cells, memories or points of consciousness.”
