Light of lineage
A sleeping face, a reaching hand and a window of unread signs
Olive gold thins into grey like smoke at the end of a day.
Small white specks drift across it, dust or far stars.
A dark window holds yellow signs no one has read yet.
A mauve hand rests on its edge.
Below, a grey face sleeps with its eyes shut.
Clear bubbles float over everything, holding a little light.
The work
This 2024 work by Lalit Ahlawat of Subharti University in Meerut is acrylic on canvas. Ahlawat does not begin with a fixed picture. The painting grows slowly in layers through looking, instinct and accident. Transparent forms and broken figures sit over one another. One figure reaches towards a dark panel full of signs like an old script. A second face rests below with closed eyes. For Ahlawat the hardest part is the balance between abstract marks and forms we can recognise.
In the artist’s words
“This work is about the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind. I work with layers, transparent forms, fragmented figures and overlapping colours. I do not always begin with a fixed image. I let the painting develop through observation, instinct, accident and response to the materials. I want to leave space for viewers to bring their own memories and emotions.”
