The unconscious surface
A single thread drops into the dark and holds on
A pale wall, scratched like an old table.
Smoke gathers in the middle and does not leave.
Brown, olive, a little rust, a few drops of blue.
One thin thread falls from the dark.
At its end a small knot, like a seed or a sleeping insect.
Below it the colour sinks into a deep round shadow.
Something is kept here, under the surface.
The work
Lalit Ahlawat of Subharti University in Meerut makes this painting in acrylic on canvas. The work is about the conscious and the unconscious mind. Ahlawat does not begin with a fixed image. The painting grows in layers through "observation, instinct, accident and response to the materials." A cloud of brown, olive and black spreads over a pale scratched ground. A thin line drops through it like a thread. Ahlawat leaves space for viewers to bring their own memories into the work.
In the artist’s words
“My work explores the relationship between the conscious and unconscious mind. My process is intuitive and experimental. I work with layers, transparent forms and overlapping colours. I do not always begin with a fixed image. The painting develops through observation, instinct, accident and response to the materials. I leave space for viewers' own memories and emotions.”
