Kamal Kishore
Superman
A hero drawn in grey, with eyes that have started to burn
Grey skin, drawn one grain at a time.
A dark curl falls across the brow.
Then the eyes: two coals, red at the edges, white at the centre.
Thin red lines run out like cracks in dry mud.
The mouth is almost a smile.
We do not know if he is about to save us.
The work
Kamal Kishore is an artist from Nainital. His college is Deen Dayal Upadhyaya College. In this drawing from 2025 he shows Superman in charcoal and pencil. The face fills the frame and looks straight at us. Small marks build up every pore, hair and line of the brow. Only the eyes are in colour. They glow red and thin red veins spread across the skin around them. Kishore likes to make comic-book heroes look real. He often works day and night for weeks on one piece.
In the artist’s words
“My interests lean heavily towards superhero characters because they open up a new world of creativity and allow me to explore many ideas and interpretations. I particularly enjoy creating realistic versions of comic-book characters. I bring their fictional identities into a more detailed and lifelike form while adding my own artistic vision to them.”
