Krishna
Butter on the spoon, butter on his cheeks, no shame at all
Blue skin against green, the colour of a field after rain.
Butter on the spoon, butter on both cheeks, caught mid-theft.
Brown curls hold a peacock eye and one yellow flower.
His eyes are wide and brown with a white spark in each.
The clay pot is still full.
Nobody has told him yet.
The work
Nancy Dalal studies at Guru Nanak Khalsa College in Yamuna Nagar. Krishna is one of five paintings she makes in 2025 about faith, courage and love. Here the god is a small child. He holds a clay pot of butter and lifts a gold spoon. Yellow butter marks both his cheeks. Dalal paints him in acrylic on a sketchbook page. For her, Bal Krishna stands for innocence, joy and devotion. He also shows "the playful beauty of childhood".
In the artist’s words
“Bal Krishna represents innocence, joy, devotion, love and the playful beauty of childhood. Together, these artworks celebrate Indian culture and spirituality while inspiring us to remain brave, peaceful, strong, balanced and positive in life.”
