Tribal women

Horns, feathers and a green face built from memory

Two brown horns curve up like the arms of a dancer.
Pink stems burst from the head, each one tipped with a green seed.
The face is a knot of green scribble inside a ring of yellow dots.
Orange lines ripple down the sides like water after rain.
Below, green crosses scatter across white ground.
The pastel sits thick and waxy on pale lilac paper, still warm from the hand.

The work

Kotha Revanth comes from the Naikpod tribal community and from a village in Mulugu district full of rivers, trees, birds and animals. Childhood memories of making masks for festivals such as Laxmi Devara and Pothuraju shape this drawing. A horned mask face rises above a white body marked with black dots. Kotha does not copy old forms. The artist rebuilds them in oil pastel with rows of dots, crosses and wavy lines on a sheet of 29.7 × 21 cm.

In the artist’s words

“I am trying to explore my connection with the Naikpod tribal community through my art. As children, we made masks for festivals like Laxmi Devara and Pothuraju. I am not trying to simply copy traditional forms; I want to reinterpret them in my own contemporary visual language. Tribal culture is not limited to the past. It is living and changing.”
