Manisha is in the second year of a degree at Delhi University and has never been to art school. Asked how she decides what to paint, she gave a two-question test: do I like it, and do I have the materials for it.
It sounds like the absence of a method. It is closer to the opposite. The first question keeps the work honest — nobody sustains a practice on subjects they are indifferent to. The second keeps it moving, because the most common reason a painting does not get made is that it required something not in the room.
Most art education spends four years adding considerations to that list. Some of them matter. It is worth noticing how far two will take you.
One opportunity this week. [Open call, checked before it goes out.]
