The Open Studio / Khushi Arora
Khushi Arora
Viraajmaan
Every eye in the room is on her. She looks back
Pink burns down into orange, then gold, behind her head.
The halo is a plate of white scrolls, cut like lace.
Eyes drift in from the corner, trailing red threads.
She does not turn to them.
She sits on cold blue petals, bangles heavy on her wrists.
Her half smile says she knew they would come.
The work
Khushi Arora paints a young woman seated on blue petals, like a goddess on a lotus. A red and white halo circles her head. She wears a cream sari with a deep pink drape and gold bangles. She looks straight at us. Dozens of eyes float beside her with red trails behind them. They all watch her. Arora is a student at the College of Art. Her work is about women and the small ways society holds them back.
In the artist’s words
“I have always tried to show the society I live in and the power that resides in women. My work is women centric. I want people to realise how we as a society suppress women in all the smallest ways. It is not about demeaning any gender. It has always been about equality.”
