A lamp bends low over a girl lost in her book
Sea green light settles over the desk.
A black lamp leans in like a heron at the water.
The girl's hair falls in one dark rope down her back.
Her book is green as a rice field after rain.
Blue chips gather at the table's edge and shine.
She does not look up. She keeps reading.
The work
Aakansha Gupta studies at Visva Bharati University. She comes from Kishanganj in Bihar. As a child she lived through a flood there. Her sculptures look at how such a disaster changes life at home. In this work a girl with a long ponytail bends over an open green book. A dark desk lamp curves above her. A pen rests on the table. Gupta sets firm clay beside glass. The clay holds still. The glass breaks the light the way water does.
In the artist’s words
“I use high-fired ceramic clay to make stiff, permanent forms of things that are fragile and temporary. I add glass for contrast. The clay gives durability. The glass brings vulnerability and fractured transparency, like the unpredictable nature of water. My glazes are not decorative. They carry the weight of mud, silt and emotional gravity.”
