Digitalized Landscape I
An evening in Santiniketan, carved slowly to look like a screen
Palms stand like burnt matches against the last of the day.
The sky breaks into steps of lime, lemon and slate.
Each step has a ragged edge, as if the light were cut with a knife.
Small lamps wait low in the dark field.
A bare tree lifts thin fingers to the gold.
Nineteen times the paper meets the wood before this evening comes.
The work
Saurav Jyoti Bordoloi makes this woodcut from an evening in Santiniketan. He cuts and prints 19 colour layers to build the picture. Tall palm trees stand black against the sky. Behind them, yellow, green and blue spread out in rough steps. The steps look like pixels on a screen. Bordoloi calls them "analogue pixels". The slow work of carving wood stands against the quick click of a camera. The print asks us to look at the land with our own eyes.
In the artist’s words
“The slow, rhythmic labour of carving wood stands in direct opposition to the instantaneous click of a camera. By rendering nature as a series of analogue pixels, he aims to provoke the viewer into recognising the thin, glowing veil that now stands between humanity and the environment. His work is an invitation to look past the screen.”
