Boini Madhusudan
Alaveni
A stage tent remembers every face that hid inside it
Tea-coloured cloth, stained the way rain stains a tent roof.
A copper fringe catches the light like a lamp left burning after the show.
Two pink eyes sit in rings of white beads and do not blink.
A dancer in green and pink turns at the edge of a brown field.
Gold thread pulls the seams tight.
Somewhere under the paint a face is still breathing.
The work
Boini Madhusudan studies at SN School of Arts and Communication in Hyderabad. The work begins with Veedhi Bhagavatham, a street theatre performed in temporary tents. Madhusudan layers and stitches tent cloth into symbolic forms. Alaveni dates from 2025. Its stained cloth carries a copper fringe, gold thread, beads and a painted figure in green and pink. For the artist the cloth is an archive of the performance. It holds the tension between the character a performer shows and the self kept hidden.
In the artist’s words
“I assemble and stitch layered tent cloth into symbolic forms, translating theatrical drama, movement and gestures into physical artefacts. The tent cloth is an archive. It carries memories of the performance and the constraints faced by the people. Through stitched theatrical props I explore the tension between the outward performance character and the concealed inner character.”
