The Raconteur is funded by its readers and by sponsors and partners who have no say in what it publishes. This page says exactly where the line is.
What a sponsor gets
A sponsor’s name on an edition or an issue, in the places we have agreed, and the audience’s attention. Advertising space, bought and labelled as advertising.
What a sponsor does not get
No sponsor sees a story before publication. No sponsor chooses an artist, or vetoes one. No sponsor is shown a list of artists under consideration. No sponsor’s product appears in editorial copy because they paid for it.
Labelling
Anything paid for is labelled as paid for, every single time, in a way a reader cannot miss. Where a partner’s money paid for an edition, that is stated inside the edition. Where a piece is advertising, it says advertising — not “partner content” or “in association with” or anything else designed to be mistaken for journalism.
Conflicts
Where anyone involved in making a story has a personal or financial interest in its subject, we disclose it in the story. Where a member of the selection panel has taught, supervised or represented a submitting artist, they do not vote on that submission.
The Catalogue
Being in the Catalogue does not buy editorial coverage, and being covered does not require being in the Catalogue. The Foundation’s cut of a sale is disclosed to the artist in writing before they list.
Gifts and hospitality
Nobody working on the magazine accepts a gift, a work, a trip or hospitality from a subject, a gallery or a sponsor beyond ordinary courtesy — a cup of tea in a studio. Anything else is declined or declared and surrendered to the Foundation.
