Krishna Ganapati
Crated
A sheet of ash, scratched back until the paper shows through
Grey ash, thick as a road after rain.
Someone has dragged a nail through it again and again.
Thin white lines show where the pale paper waits underneath.
Two empty slots wait for hands to lift it.
The other edge is cut into teeth.
It looks like the side of a box left out too long.
What was carried in it is gone.
The work
Krishna Ganapati grew up in Mavinkurva near Honnavar. It is a place of coconut plantations, laterite soil, the sea and backwaters. Ganapati has watched that land change. In Crated, ash and synthetic glue cover a sheet of Canson paper. Long scratches cut through the grey crust and show pale paper underneath. The sheet is cut into a hard shape. Two narrow slots sit near one edge. Square notches bite into the other. Ganapati studies at the SN School of Arts and Communication, University of Hyderabad.
In the artist’s words
“I come from Mavinkurva near Honnavar. I have seen how the landscape is changing around me. I look at the marks we leave on the land. I don't want to just represent a landscape. I want to show its layers: what has been removed, added, changed or left behind.”
