Ranjini A M
Uruma
She carries the firewood and looks straight back at you
The path is red earth, dry and bright in the sun.
Split wood rises from her head like a crown no one gave her.
Her arm holds it there without asking for help.
A thin chain catches the light at her throat.
Her blouse is the colour of ripe papaya. Her wrap is the grey green of rain.
Behind her the leaves keep growing. She keeps looking at us.
The work
Ranjini A M paints an older woman on a red earth path. A bundle of firewood rests on her head. One raised arm holds it steady. She looks straight at us. The painting is in acrylic and measures 90 × 60 cm. Ranjini gives care to small things: the thin chain at the neck, the lines of the skin, the folds of the dark wrap. In her statement she says she is drawn to what often remains unseen. Ranjini is based in Thrissur and her college is SIES, Bombay.

Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, I use colour, symbolism, and surreal imagery to transform personal experiences and observations into visual narratives. My works often begin with something familiar—a human eye, a staircase, a doorway, a natural element, or an everyday object—and gradually move beyond reality into an imagined space. Through this process, I seek to reveal meanings that may not be immediately visible. My…
