Dabu cushion cover
White leaves, flowers and wings held in deep blue cloth
Dark blue, like the hour before rain.
A white leaf stands up like a small tree.
Thin wings of an insect, pressed flat and bright.
The cloth keeps the soft edge of every mark.
Morning sun comes through the curtain and rests on the cushions.
You want to lay your open palm on the blue.
The work
Ayushi Singh makes this cushion cover with dabu print. It measures 35 × 35 cm. White flowers, leaves and winged shapes sit on deep blue cloth. Singh is from Sandila. Her college is Banaras Hindu University. Her work often begins with looking at nature. Then she draws, tests samples and lets the material lead. She does not want to copy old methods. She wants to understand them and carry them into the present. The small marks of the hand stay in the print. To her, they are not mistakes.
In the artist’s words
“I am interested in the small details that appear through handwork: the mark left by a block or the way colour changes when it meets a different fabric. For me, these details are not imperfections. Techniques such as Dabu printing have helped me understand the value of patience and the importance of making something by hand.”
