Carpet
A sheet of paper that wants to be a carpet
A cream ground with every inch in bloom.
Red petals, blue petals, a leaf of mustard gold.
Thin stems curl and branch like rivers on a map.
At the edge a wine-dark border keeps the garden in.
Small stripes walk beside it in single file.
There is no thread here, only paint that remembers wool.
The work
Ayushi Singh paints Carpet with poster colour on a sheet of paper 29.7 × 21 cm. The work is from 2023. It shows one corner of a carpet. A deep red border holds large flowers and green vines. Thin striped bands run inside it. Then a cream field fills with small flowers in red, blue, green and gold. Singh studies at Banaras Hindu University and works in textile design. She grew up around fabrics and prints. For her, "textiles are more than something we see or wear."

Textile design allows me to explore these connections through making. I enjoy working with processes such as printing, embroidery, weaving, tapestry, and surface manipulation because they give me time to understand the material. I am interested in the small details that appear through handwork—the irregularity of a…
