MEMORY
Two bare feet, drawn in slow rows of red thread
Black cloth, dark as a room after the lamp goes out.
Two feet step out of it with toes curled and still warm.
Red thread, then orange, then pale yellow, loop after loop.
The legs climb towards a scrap of someone's red dress.
White rings float on it like bangles left on a shelf.
Every stitch is a small hour of sitting still.
The work
Tithi Gain makes Memory from clothes and yarn on black cloth. Two legs and feet reach up towards a piece of red printed fabric. Each line is a row of small stitches in yellow, orange, red and white. Gain's course is the MFA at the S.N. School of Art and Communication, University of Hyderabad. She is based in Basirhat. She stitches because the craft is tied to domestic work and women's labour. For her, one thread can be one woman's life. Many threads together are the larger structures around women.
In the artist’s words
“Through stitching and weaving I depict different aspects of women's struggles and experiences. These materials and processes are important to me because they are traditionally connected with domestic work and women's labour. A thread can represent an individual experience, while many threads together can represent the larger social structures that surround women.”
