Hauz Khas 1
A green path opens where the mist comes down to the bushes
Grey and white crowd the top of the paper like breath on cold glass.
Below, the bushes twist in black, olive and rust.
A pale green strip opens through them and runs toward you.
Something thin and dark stands still in the middle.
The crayon is pressed hard here and soft there.
You stop and wait with it in the mist.
The work
Akash Goenka makes Hauz Khas 1 in 2025 in New Delhi. The drawing uses Conté crayon and oil pastel on paper and measures 29 × 41 cm. Goenka builds the colour in layers. Small white and grey marks fill the sky and drift down into the dark bushes like mist. A pale green strip runs through the middle. Goenka's landscapes come from looking closely at familiar places and paths. Goenka took up art seriously in 2019. The aim is a picture that moves people, not only a pretty one.
In the artist’s words
“My landscapes come from observing familiar places, paths and flowers. I'm in love with oil pastels: their immediacy, their texture and the way they let me build up colour and atmosphere in layers. I'm less interested in making a beautiful painting than a moving one. The real challenge is knowing when to stop.”
