Trying to smoke here.
A goldfish on his break, blowing bubbles where smoke should be
A goldfish takes his five minutes against a grey wall.
Orange scales, a shirt the colour of thin milk, a brown belt pulled tight.
Behind him a stripe of hard blue stands up like a door left open.
His eyelids sit heavy. The cigarette rests pale between orange fingers.
He breathes out and the air turns to glass.
Bubbles drift up, a small rainbow caught in each skin.
The work
Nathan Biju George draws fish as if they are people. Here a goldfish in a pale blue shirt with rolled sleeves stands with one hand on his hip. He lifts a cigarette to his mouth. What rises is not smoke but soap bubbles. George makes the work digitally in 2026. He has worked digitally only since 2025 and he treats each drawing as a chance to experiment. "I like to believe that each fish has human characteristics, living their own lives, just like us."
In the artist’s words
“I like to believe that each fish has human characteristics, living their own lives just like us. I imagine they have their own personalities, emotions and little lives happening around them. There is something about drawing aquatic life that makes me feel calm and happy. I would like my art to give that feeling to others too.”
