“A Sparrow”
Three butterflies drift close to a web they cannot see
Brown ink on pale paper, the colour of tea left too long in a cup.
The sparrow turns its head away from the butterflies.
Below its feet, a web holds the broken wood together.
Three butterflies drift, light as dry leaves.
No one in this picture is hungry yet.
The branch points down and out of the frame.
The paper keeps its quiet.
The work
Aman Kumar is a student at RIMT University in Ludhiana. He makes this print in 2025. A sparrow sits at the top of a broken branch. A spider has spun its web where the thin twig meets the thick wood. Three butterflies float in the empty space around the bird. Every line is printed in a warm brown. In his other prints, Kumar says the hardest part is keeping tiny details from getting muddy. Here the thin threads of the web stay sharp and clear.

To bring these to life, I primarily worked with woodcuts for the landscape and narrative pieces, carving into the blocks to create intense, graphic blacks and crisp white negative spaces. For the cathedral piece, I switched gears and used an etching/intaglio technique, which allowed me to get those sketchy, fine architectural lines and a rich,…
