blooming flowers
Seven flowers with hearts you want to touch
A sky slides from night blue into pink, rough as plaster after rain.
Seven flowers stand shoulder to shoulder under it.
Some wear old prints, dots and paisley, pieced like a quilt.
Others are paint flecked with black, like pepper on orange.
Their hearts are heaped with amber and frost, small stones you want to touch.
The whole field glitters slowly, the way a crowd does in the sun.
The work
Harshini Kishan is an artist based in Mumbai. She came to art after a start in science and years as an Air India flight attendant. Her practice moves between painting, textiles and mixed media. In this work from 2025 seven large flowers fill the square. Some petals are pieced together from small patterned scraps. Others are painted over a rough, raised surface. The centres are heaps of small glassy pieces in amber, white and red. Kishan starts without a fixed plan and lets each piece find its own direction.

In the artist’s words
Harshini Kishan is a visual artist whose practice spans painting, textiles, and mixed media. Rooted in the interplay of spirituality, tradition, and contemporary expression, her work transforms fabrics, threads, and unconventional surfaces into vessels of cultural memory. By layering materiality into compositions that blur the boundaries between painting, installation, and textile art, she situates her practice at the intersection of physical presence and symbolic meaning. Her process is intuitive and open-ended. Each piece evolves organically, beginning without a fixed plan and gradually revealing its own direction through mark-making, texture, and form. Imperfections are embraced as integral to the narrative, lending her work a raw immediacy. Everyday encounters—objects, fleeting moments, subtle…
