The Metaphor
She hides her eyes. The face on the wall does not
Brown walls fold into a corner like a box half shut.
A strip of red sits tight across her eyes. She smiles anyway.
The cat's pink tongue touches the milk. Its pale blue eyes stay open.
Her fingers rest on the cold rim of the glass.
Up on the wall a face hangs in shadow, patient as old wood.
Nothing in this room is as hidden as it thinks.
The work
Rudraksh Pandit studies at the Government Fine Art College in Indore. The Metaphor is oil on canvas, 60 × 60 cm. The idea starts with a cat. It shuts its eyes while it drinks milk and thinks no one can see it. Pandit sets this in a dim brown room. A woman with a red cloth over her eyes kneels by a glass bowl of milk. A cat drinks from it. On the wall a shadowed face looks down at them. For Pandit this face is truth, always watching.
In the artist’s words
“Just as a cat closes its eyes while drinking milk, foolishly believing no one can see it, we often try to hide our past misdeeds. But true reality always sees. The shadowed face in the background is the silent, inescapable presence of truth. Time and consequence eventually expose what was done in the dark. Truth cannot be hidden forever.”
